2009 GAME RECAPS


Monday July 14:  Titans 14, Shockers 4
0-0 game into the bottom of the 5th; Shockers came up with 4 runs on key hits from Bolander and Toncar.  The lead didn't last long as the Titans put 10 across in the top of the 6th inning through a mix of BB's, hits, and hit batsmen.  Titans added 4 in the 7th.

Thursday July 9:  Aces 5, Nite Hawks 3
All-star pitcher Tyler Strub and the flexible Aces defense turned in a solid performance. Several Aces made their debut at new positions showing their versatility. Aaron “Hoover” Jarosh played a flawless 3rd base, all-star Ryan McCauley put on a clinic at 2nd base, and Tim “The Machine” Easter once again confirmed he’s a star no matter where he plays. James Stone was the losing pitcher of record for the Nite Hawks. Tyler Strub threw a complete game and picked up the win for the Aces.

Wednesday July 8:  Aces 2, Titans 0
Aces scored both runs in the 3rd inning. Aces’ all-star Ryan McCauley singled home the first run and Casey Strub walked with the bases loaded to plate the second run. The Aces left a total of 15 runners stranded on base as the Titan pitchers and defense did a good job getting out of trouble all night. The star of the night was Austin Wilcox. Wilcox threw a complete game shutout for the Aces giving up only 5 hits and 2 walks. This was the Aces’ all-star pitcher’s second complete game shutout of the year.

Sunday July 5 - Game 1:  Aces 4, Shockers 3
Neither offense was too impressive as both pitching staffs kept batters off balance.  The Shockers made a late push scoring two in the top of the 7th just falling short in this close game.

 

Game 2:  Shockers 6, Aces 2

Aces had plenty of chances leaving several runners on base.  Dobson battled out of several situations getting the Aces to pop up in almost every big situation.  The Shockers offense continued the 7th inning performance from the game before with consisting hitting all game and finally breaking the scoreless contest in the top of the 4th and breaking it open in the 5th and 6th.

Tuesday June 30 - Cubs 15, Tigers 14
The Cubs battled back from an early 7-2 deficit and hung on to win.  Alex Brown and Garrett Manning had multiple hits for the Cubs.  The Tigers stroked the ball well throughout the game.  Eric Nordstrom got the win and Troy Dubay got the save. 

Saturday June 27 - Cubs 6, Shockers 4
Big 6th inning this time for the Cubs as they come up with 6 runs after being down 4-0. 2 big hits, 3 HBP, and a walk gave the Cubs what they needed.  Slings had the 2RBI single that put the Cubs up for good.  Beals and Hemesath 2-3 (Beals 2x 3B)

Saturday June 27 - Shockers 6, Cubs 4
Big 6th inning for the Shockers as they put 5 across to go up 6-2. Grimes with a 2RBI triple and scored on Jensen's double in the next at-bat.  Cubs made it interesting in the 7th as they scored two and brought the tying run to the plate.  Herrick got the win on 6 1/3 innings, 3 K's, 3 earned runs on just 1 hit.  Dubay scored twice for the Cubs.  Dobson 1-2 2B SB BB HBP 2R, Hemesath 2-3 2B 2RBI R, Grimes 1-3 3B 2RBI R.

Thursday June 25 - Devils 15, Shockers 10
Shockers took an early 5-2 lead after 1 with a two 2-RBI singles from Dobson and Bolander and an RBI double from Beals.  Devils tied the game at 6-6 in the 6th; runs scored by Reynolds, Lagan, George, and Peters.  Shockers scored 2 in the bottom of the frame to go up 8-6, but the Devils came up with a huge 6-run 7th inning to take the lead for good. Shockers: Pudans 2-4 RBI 3R, Beals 3-5 2B 2RBI, Bolander 1-4 2RBI R BB.


Monday June 22 - Shockers 9, Cubs 6
The Shockers broke into the win column with a good game played on both sides.  Shockers took a 5-1 lead into the 4th thanks to separate 2-RBI singles from Beals and Brandhorst.  Dobson brought 2 home with a single in the 6th.  Dobson and Hogans each scored 3 times; Hemesath 1-3 w/ 2-RBI's.
The Cubs scored a run in each inning except the 2nd, 3rd, and 9th.  Big game for Miksell who went 3-5 with two 2B's and a 3B and two runs scored.
Herrick got the win for the Shockers giving up 4 runs in 5 1/3; Dobson threw 2/3rds giving up 1 run; and Watson closed the final 3 innings, giving up 1 unearned run.

Sunday June 14 - Aces 6, Nite Hawks 2 (game 1)
Slater scored first with 3 consecutive singles in the 2nd inning. The Aces answered with 3 runs in the 5th. Aaron Jarosh (Muscatine CC/Ankeny) led off the inning and was hit by the pitch before stealing second and scoring on a Ryan McCauley single. McCauley scored on a fielder’s choice by Tim Easter (Muscatine CC/Ankeny) and then Austin Wilcox (Iowa/Valley) scored on a single by Aaron Smith (DM Lincoln). Dustin Dellacheisa hit a solo homer for the Nighthawks in the 6th to make it a one run game. The Aces scored their final 3 runs with two outs in the 7th. T.J. Roemmich (Creighton/Dowling) hit a double to deep left to score the final 2 runs.

Sunday June 14 - Aces 10, Nite Hawks 0, 5 innings (game 2)
The Aces scored early and often in this one. The Aces offense was highlighted by home runs from both T.J. Roemmich and Tim Easter, but the defense was the story of the night. Austin Wilcox threw a no-hitter walking 3 and striking out 5 in the 5-inning contest.

Thursday, June 11 - Nite Hawks 15, Shockers 2
The Shockers were down early, 7-0 after the 1st.  The Nite Hawks hit the ball a whole lot, scoring another 5 runs in the 3rd.  Things calmed down after that, but the game was called in the 7th.

Wednesday, June 10 - Cubs 9, Titans 6
The Cubs offense had 14 hits in the 9-6 victory.  Thirdbasemen Troy Dubay (Concordia/Johnston) collected 4 hits, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, and a stolen base.  Shortstop Ryan Brouwer(Southwestern CC/East) continued his solid play with strong defense and a 3 for 5 night with 3 RBI.  Thomas Rosin pitched 5 scoreless innings allowing just 1 hit to pick up the victory.  Veteran pitcher Cory Slining picked up a save over 2 1/3 innings of work.  
The Titans were led by Joel Harthorn, who had 3 hits and 1 run scored.

Tuesday, June 9 - Devils 8, Shockers 5

Devils put up the first 4 runs of the game and took a 4-0 lead into the 6th. Shockers came up with 5 runs in the 6th inning to go up 5-4, but the Devils tied it in the 7th and came up with 3 runs in the 8th.  Donohoe gave up two hits to open the game, but then sat down 14 consecutive batters, including 11 K's (finished w/ 12K's & 5 1/3 innings).  The Shockers got to him in the 6th, when Leatherman hit a bases clearing double and scored one play later to tie it at 4. The Devils' Reynolds was 2-4 w/ 2R's a SAC and BB; Shockers' Hogans was 2-3 w/ 1R and 2BB, Beals 1-3 w/ a 2B a RBI and BB.

Monday, June 8 - Aces 6, Titans 4
Another classic extra inning battle between the Aces and Titans. Will Scholer gave up 3 runs in the first, then settled down and pitched 7 strong innings for the Titans. The Aces scored 2 runs in the top of the 10th with the second run coming from a key pinch hit sacrifice fly from Casey Strub (Indianola). T.J. Roemmich (Creighton/Dowling) closed the door in the 9th and 10th securing the win for the Aces and picked up his first win on the mound this season.

Sunday, June 7 - Game 2 - Nite Hawks/Cubs RAINOUT

Sunday, June 7 - Game 1 - Nite Hawks 3, Cubs 3 - PPD due to rain
This game is tied in the bottom of the 5th with 2 outs. 

Sunday, June 7 - Game 2 - Devils 6, Tigers 4
Steve Bieghler paced the Devils offense with 3 hits, 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.  Zach Ryan picked up the win for the Devils with a strong relief appearance.

Sunday, June 7 - Game 1 - Devils 5, Tigers 0
Chase Anderson (Northwest Missouri State/Hoover) pitched a complete game shutout.  He scattered 5 hits and had no walks.

Saturday, June 6 - Shockers/Aces RAINOUT

Friday, June 5 - Cubs 6, Shockers 3
Solid defense and pitching carried the Cubs to the win.  Eric Nordstrom (Luther/Valley) earned the win, going 5 innings, allowing 2 earned runs, 2 hits, and 4 K's.  The middle infield of Ryan Brouwer (Southwestern CC/East) and Alex Brown (Dordt/Ankeny) had many assists.  Zach Kinsey (Grandview/Lincoln) was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored.  Brouwer contributed with his bat as well, going 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
Eric Watson threw 7 strong innings for the Shockers, giving up only 4 runs.

Thursday, June 4 - Aces 10 Tigers 3
The Aces got another strong pitching performance, this time from Tyler Strub (ISU/Indianola). Strub threw 8 innings holding the Tigers to just 2 runs. He had 11 strikeouts and one walk. He held the Tigers hitless through 5 innings and gave up a total of 4 hits on the night. The top of the order got things going for the Aces on the offense. Ben Roemmich (Wartburg/Dowling) and Bryan Lippincott (Concordia St.Paul/Johnston) went a combined 8 for 12, scoring 5 of the Aces 10 runs. They also combined for 4 RBI in the game. Ryan McCauley (UNI/Johnston) had another strong performance reaching base safely 4 out of 6 appearances and contributed with 4 RBI of his own.

Wednesday, June 3 - Aces 8 Slater 2
Austin Wilcox pitched well in the season opener for the Aces. Wilcox had 7 strikeouts and scatted four hits giving up one run in 7 innings of work. Everyone chipped in on offense for the Aces. Ben Roemmich led the way going 2-3 with 3 RBI. Newcomer Ryan McCauley hit the ball hard all night in his Aces debut and T.J. Roemmich contributed with 3 steals in the game.

Tuesday, June 2 - Shockers/Tigers RAINOUT


Monday, June 1 - Devils 4, Titans 0
The Devils got outstanding pitching and defense as they defeated the Titans in their season opener.  Mike Donahoe and rookie Chase Anderson (Hoover/Northwest Missouri State) combined for 0 runs over 9 innings.  Devils 2nd baseman Kellen Vance (Ankeny/Kirkwood) led the offense with 3 hits in 4 at bats.  Blake Reynolds provided a key 2-run single. 

Friday, May 29 - Slater 11, Titans 6
